Summer Holidays

Summer Holidays

One Small Step @ Peterborough Cathedral – 17th July – 31st October – Mon-Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 12-3pm – Thursday during school holiday 6.30-8.30pm – Jetting away to the sun may be out of reach, but if you bring the family to Peterborough Cathedral this summer you could be ‘walking on the moon’ instead!

The Cathedral will be hosting a giant representation of the lunar surface, created by the renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker using imagery from NASA.

The 36m x 7m art installation, entitled One Small Step was originally created to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing in 2019, when it was shown at Lichfield Cathedral.

At Peterborough Cathedral it will transform a huge area of the floor in the north and south transepts, and under the tower, into an image of the moon’s terrain, showing all the craters and details of the lunar rock. Visitors will be able to walk on the surface and even locate the place where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their Apollo 11 landing in 1969. It will be a great spot to take a selfie!

Nene Park Explorer Challenge @ Nene Park – Aimed at younger children (5-12 year olds) and their families, we will be launching a new Park Explorer Challenge each Monday throughout the summer holidays, starting from Monday 26 July.

The challenges will take you out to different areas across Nene Park and will involve activities such as puzzles, quizzes and spotter games in each of the different areas. When you have completed each challenge you can award yourself a ‘sticker’ which can be fixed to your own challenge chart.

The six challenges, explorer chart and stickers can all be downloaded from our website  https://www.nenepark.org.uk/park-explorer-challenge or picked up from our Visitor Centre or Nene Outdoors. Complete all six challenges and you can come to the Visitor Centre or Nene Outdoors at the end of the summer to claim your ‘Park Explorer’ badge!

The activities are free, but donations are welcome.

Summer Reading Challenge – Saturday 10th July children aged 4-11 can join the challenge for free at their local library. Read 6 library books over the summer holiday, collect a sticker for each book you read to put on your special collector’s poster, and earn a certificate if you complete the challenge. Plus, younger children can join in too, by taking part in the mini challenge. Get your special mini challenge folder, receive stickers for sharing six library books with your grown-ups over the summer and earn a certificate. Join the Summer Reading Challenge for free at your local library from Saturday 10th July and become a Wild World Hero!

Roar and Seek @ Queensgate Shopping Centre – This summer, visitors to Queensgate can experience a shopping trip like no other, as dinosaurs make their landing in Peterborough between Thursday 22nd July and Monday 30th August. A cage will house the ravenous raptors for the first two weeks of the event. Located in North Square, shoppers can get a 360-degree view of the incredible creatures. They look friendly and tame, but don’t get too close to their claws! The cage will be watched over by two specially-trained guards to keep onlookers safe… but don’t be afraid to take a raptor selfie and upload it to social media with the #RoarAndSeek hashtag between 22nd July and 5th August. Everyone who does will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a family ticket to Gulliver’s Dinosaur Park and Farm, Milton Keynes. As part of the event, 15 dinosaurs will be ‘roaming’ the centre in an augmented reality experience suitable for all ages, giving shoppers the chance to live out their Jurassic Park dreams and come face to face with dinos via their own smartphones. The Dino Hunt experience, which is a free event for everyone, will be an entirely contactless activity for families to enjoy and there’s no need to book tickets for the event. Those who are keen to get involved simply need to download the Roar and Seek free app which will be available on IOS and Android from the 8 July , for full access to the Augmented Reality trail experience. Everyone who completes the trail will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a weekly prize, which could see you take home a £50 gift card for use at Queensgate. Last but not least, all little explorers who complete the trail will be invited to collect a dinosaur colouring book and sticker sheet as a reward for their hard work!
